Airtel Africa Plans London Listing Of Airtel Money Through IPO
Airtel Africa Plc, a leading provider of telecommunications and mobile money services across 14 African markets, has announced plans for the proposed initial public offering (IPO) and listing of its Airtel Money business on the London Stock Exchange (LSE).
The company disclosed this in an announcement dated September 23, 2026, stating that Airtel Money intends to proceed with an IPO and apply for admission of its ordinary shares to the equity shares (commercial companies) category of the Official List of the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and to trading on the Main Market of the London Stock Exchange.
The proposed transaction is expected to create a separately listed Airtel Money business, giving investors an opportunity to gain direct exposure to the group’s rapidly developing mobile money operations.
According to the announcement, the proposed IPO will comprise a secondary offering of existing Airtel Money shares, meaning that the transaction will involve the sale of shares held by existing shareholders rather than the issuance of new shares by Airtel Money.
Consequently, Airtel Money will not raise new capital from the IPO.
Airtel Africa currently beneficially owns 77.85 per cent of Airtel Money’s issued ordinary share capital. Following the proposed admission and listing, Airtel Africa said it expects to remain a long-term strategic shareholder in the mobile money business and continue to support its next phase of development as an independently listed company.
The planned listing represents a significant step in the evolution of Airtel Money, which has become an increasingly important component of Airtel Africa’s broader business, providing mobile financial services to customers across its African markets.
The company said the announcement provides information about Airtel Money, including details of its operations, strategy and financial performance, as well as its current trading position and outlook.
The proposed transaction is subject to the applicable regulatory and listing requirements, as well as the completion of the IPO process.
Airtel Africa said further information concerning the proposed Airtel Money IPO is available on the company’s dedicated website.
The planned listing also comes as mobile money continues to play a growing role in Africa’s financial ecosystem, with telecommunications companies increasingly using their extensive customer networks and digital platforms to provide payments and other financial services.
For Airtel Africa, the separation and proposed listing of Airtel Money could provide a distinct market platform for investors to assess the mobile financial services business independently, while allowing Airtel Africa to retain a significant strategic interest.
The company, however, stressed that the proposed offering is a secondary sale, with no new capital being raised by Airtel Money.
The announcement was issued jointly from London and Lagos on September 23, 2026.
Airtel Africa operates telecommunications and mobile money services across 14 African markets. Its decision to retain a substantial shareholding in Airtel Money after the proposed listing underscores its intention to remain involved in the business while allowing it to operate as an independently listed entity.
