Votes, Not Guns Will Decide Osun Next Gov – INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said the decision on who becomes the next Governor of Osun State will not be decided by the barrel of the gun, but by the will of the people of the state expressed at the poll.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, who spoke on Friday at the palace of Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun Oyetunji, said no blood of any Osun citizen should be shed just to elect the governor of the state.

“We don’t want violence. And we are very concerned as a commission. Nobody should die because of an election in Osun,” Prof. Amupitan stated.

The INEC Chairman disclosed that the commission has engaged with the Inspector-General of Police, the Minister of Defence, the Chief of Defence Staff and Service Chiefs to ensure special deployment to Osun State.

“As an institution, we are committed to ensuring that this is achieved. And the good people of Osun State will have the opportunity to decide who governs them,” he added.

The Ataoja, Oba Oyetunji, in his remarks, called on INEC to deliver a credible election in Osun on August 15, and to ensure that the will of the citizens of the state will prevail.

Also speaking, the Asiwaju of Osogbo, Justice Moshood Adeigbe, appealed to the citizens of the state to conduct themselves to ensure free and fair elections.
